Sri Lankan leaders condemn attacks in New York and Washington
[September 13, 2001 - 4:45 GMT]

Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar strongly condemned the terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre in New York and the Pentagon in Washington DC on September 11.

“Acts of terrorism cannot be condoned under any circumstances whatsoever. We condemn in the strongest possible terms these acts of wanton destruction, which cannot be tolerated by civilised society. The time has come for the international community to close ranks and to take practical and meaningful action to eradicate terrorism,” Kadirgamar said in a message to Secretary of State, Colin Powell.

He added that Sri Lanka as always stands ready to work closely with the United States and the rest of the international community towards the realisation of this objective.

Meanwhile, Leader of Sri Lanka’s Opposition, Ranil Wickremasinghe, has expressed his condolences to all the families affected by what he described as ‘the biggest terrorist attack in the world.’ He was expected to send a message to President George W. Bush Wednesday, conveying the solidarity of the Sri Lankan people, as well as his party, with the people and the Government of the United States, ‘at this tragic and critical moment.’

The full text of the Foreign Minister’s message to Secretary of State, Colin Powell is as follows:

I am profoundly shocked by the horrendous terrorist attacks and the consequent loss of life, injury and destruction of property in New York and Washington. I offer to you my deepest sympathies on this tragic loss.

I was particularly distressed to learn of the bomb attack outside the State Department. My colleagues at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs join me in conveying to you our deep concern for the safety of you and all your colleagues at the State Department.

Acts of terrorism cannot be condoned under any circumstances whatsoever. We condemn in the strongest possible terms these acts of wanton destruction, which cannot be tolerated by civilised society. The time has come for the international community to close ranks and to take practical and meaningful action to eradicate terrorism.

Sri Lanka as always stands ready to work closely with the United States and the rest of the international community towards the realisation of this objective.
