South Asian Chamber of Commerce at WTO Conference
[September 15, 2001 - 8:00 GMT]

For the first time in its history, SAARC Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) will be attending the crucial World Trade Organisation’s (WTO) Ministerial Conference in Doha, Qatar from 9 to 13 November.

“The participation in the capacity of an observer is a major milestone in SCCI’s achievements. It will give the premier private sector grouping of South Asia an opportunity to keep abreast with the latest discussions and trends in world trade and press for policies and measures to benefit SAARC members,” SCCI primary member Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sri Lanka’s (FCCISL) Secretary-General Samantha Abeywickrema said.

According to Abeywickrema, a senior delegation is likely to represent SCCI at the WTO meeting in Doha unlike earlier when SAARC countries were represented through respective trade and commerce ministers.

The Ministerial Conference – the top most decision-making body of the WTO - meets at least once in two years.

The SCCI members will meet next at its Annual General Meeting scheduled for early next year.
