Mangala Samaraweera stepped down from the portfolios of Urban Development, Public Utilities, Housing and Sports. He will be the Deputy Minister in charge of these subjects. President Kumaratunga takes over the Ministries. Jeyaraj Fernandopulle was sworn in as the Minister of Tourism, Aviation and Christian Affairs in the new cabinet yesterday. Wijeyapala Mendis took oaths as the Minister of Cultural Affairs and Science and Technology last Friday. Official sources said that Arumugam Thondaman who was not in Sri Lanka to take oaths last Friday would be sworn-in as a Minister, Monday. Thondaman is the leader of the main political party representing the Tamil community in the country’s plantation sector and the former Minister of Estate Infrastructure & Livestock Development.
