[September 18, 2001 - 12:30 GMT]

Many celebrities in the country would mingle with the public joining hands on September 19 at 11.55 a.m. urging all political leaders of the country to commence peace negotiations and end the war.

SriLanka First - its now or never” is an apolitical peace initiative launched by leading business associations in Sri Lanka.

"We are prepared to go further, even to the Wanni if it is necessary. This is only the first step that will be taken. We urge the public to show solidarity with this cause by stepping out of their homes or workplaces and holding hands on September 19," General Manager National Development Bank, Ranjith Fernando said.

Olympic medallist Susanthika Jayasinghe, Sarvodaya Leader A.T. Ariyaratne, Singing sensations Bathiya & Santhush, Sri Lanka's Cricket Captain Sanath Jayasuriya, Coach Dav Watmore, and all rounder Russel Arnold and many others are expected to be public roads endorsing the call for peace.

"Peace in this country will bring prosperity to all. With all my heart, I will support this process," said Dr. A.T Ariyaratne, head of Sarvodaya - Sri Lanka's largest NGO.

Popular singers Bathiya and Santhush said that if people of various faiths and cultures can gather together to enjoy music, they could surely stand as one for peace. “With time hearts have got really hardened. What is most required is to soften the hearts and begin to love for each other", soft spoken Santhush said.

In a statement, Sri Lanka's cricket coach Dav Whatmore said, "Total peace is total harmony. My dream is that Sri Lanka achieves total peace. Let us all work together to achieve this".
