Cabinet approves draft constitutional amendment

The Cabinet of Ministers Tuesday unanimously approved the draft of the 17^th amendment to the Constitution for the establishment of the four independent commissions; police, media, judiciary and public services and the Constitutional Council.

In terms of the constitution, it has also been referred to the Supreme Court for a decision.

Opposition parties in Sri Lanka have for long called for the establishment of these independent commissions as a move towards greater democracy in the country.
