[September 21, 2001 - 12:20 GMT]

Over Rs. 2.6 billion has been allocated to provide relief to over 365,560 families in drought-affected areas, Minister of Health and Indigenous Medicine, Nimal Siripala De Silva told a news conference Wednesday.

Through this drought relief programme it is expected to supply uninterrupted drinking water and food to the affected families in these areas.

Over 82,000 acres of paddy and other cash crops including animal husbandry have been badly affected in the areas of Hambantota, Moneragala and Ampara Districts. The drought has people in the Puttalam, Kurunegala and Badulla districts as well and the water levels of water tanks in these districts have drastically dropped in the past few months.
