Sri Lanka establishes Diplomatic relations with Madagascar

Sri Lanka and Madagascar have established diplomatic relations with effect from July 27, 2001. The agreement to establish diplomatic relations was signed between the Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar and Madagascar Foreign Minister Mme. Lila Ratsifandrihamanana.

Conveying the Madagascar government's good wishes, the Madagascar Foreign Minister expressed her intention to visit Sri Lanka shortly to pursue further enhancement of exchanges and interactions between the two countries in the trade, economic and investment fields. After signing the agreement both countries agreed to expedite procedures for the appointment of resident Honorary Consuls. 

Establishment of diplomatic relations are expected to bring about benefits for the gem trade, in strengthening economic and trade exchanges with this resource rich nation which is emerging as a major source of gem and precious stones.

After a comprehensive exchange of views a decision was made to streamline and simplify procedures for the export of gems from Madagascar to the mutual benefit of gem traders in both countries. Sri Lanka expressed readiness to share its experience in the current efforts by Madagascar to formulate strategies to reform its gem mining and export sector. Sri Lanka's offer to provide technical assistance in lapidary and gemology was warmly welcomed by the Madagascar government.
