World Tourism Organisation Secretary-General Francesco Frangialli has said that violence had to be eradicated for tourism to prosper, but that there is also a need for greater tolerance. He made these comments in a
message to mark the 22nd World Tourism Day. This year’s theme
is, “Tourism a Tool for Peace and Dialogue among Civilisation” is
timely given the impact of international terrorism on the global tourism
industry. "Dialogue between Civilizations, is an invitation to reflect upon the contribution that tourism can make to dialogue between civilizations”, John Paul II, head of the Roman Catholic Church said. The Ceylon Tourist Board has organized a series of events to mark the day. A workshop on career guidance in the tourism sector will be held in Moneragala, while regional awareness programmes will be held in the Southern, North Western, Uva and Sabaragamuwa Provinces. World Tourism Day has been celebrated all over the world since 1980 to foster awareness among the international community of the importance of tourism and its contribution to development, international cooperation and world peace.
