President Chandrika Kumaratunga who was due to leave for Brisbane yesterday for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) cancelled her trip, after it was announced that the Summit was being postponed due to ‘unforeseen circumstances’. The statement issued by the Commonwealth Secretariat said that the decision was taken in the light of the likely absence of a significant number of leader, due to the uncertain mood that prevails around the world after the terrorist attacks in the US. CHOGM scheduled to take place between October 6 and 9 was due to be opened by the Head of the Commonwealth, Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II, and 45 Commonwealth leaders were expected to attend. Australia is hopeful the summit could be held sometime early next year.
