US President’s Executive Order to affect LTTE
[October 1, 2001 - 11:00 GMT]

The Executive order, made by the President George W. Bush after the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington on 11th September 2001, will apply to the LTTE as well as it is one of the foreign terrorist organisations designated by the US in 1997.

The Executive order which was issued by the President of the United States after last month’s terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, blocking property and prohibiting transactions with persons who commit, threaten to commit or support terrorism will apply with equal force to those listed in the Executive Order issued on 24th September 2001, as well as those already designated as Foreign Terrorist Organisations under the Anti-Terrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act of 1996.

The US Secretary of State designated the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam [LTTE] as a foreign terrorist organisation among 30 other groups on 8th October 1997.
