“We are committed to providing decent living standards” - CBK

President Kumaratunga issuing a message to mark World Habitat Day said that the government was committed to providing decent living standards for the urban poor of the country.

The President who is also the Minister of Urban Development said, “The hitherto unplanned nature of our cities led to a proliferation of shanties to the extent that the city of Colombo was on the verge of being strangled by slum dwellings.”

The Sustainable Township Programme of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development was one of the steps taken by the government to curb the situation.
