The Ministry of Health last week decided on a scheme of Parallel Imports to bring down the escalating bill for imported drugs. “It is hoped that this scheme will allow a substantial reduction of the prices of selected imported drugs and the government’s expenditure as well”, Director General of Health, Dr. A. M. I. Beligaswatte said. The Ministry has given the green light to the State Pharmaceutical Corporation (SPC) to go ahead with the scheme. A special committee chaired by Prof. Colvin Gooneratne, Chairman SPC, will decide on the logistics of import selection, assurance of quality control etc. The committee will study the requests on a case-by-case basis, and issue licences to enable the SPC to process the imports. The responsibility for the quality of the imported drugs would lie with the SPC.
