Sri Lankan Bishop appointed to Vatican post

Rt. Rev. Dr. Malcolm Ranjith, the Bishop of Ratnapura has been appointed as the Joint Secretary to the Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples from October 1, by Pope John Paul II and elevated to the status of an Archbishop.

The Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples supervises the missions, especially in the Asian, African and Latin American regions and is responsible for the evangelisation of Christianity throughout the world.

This is the first time that a Sri Lankan has been appointed to the Secretariat in Rome.

Archbishop Malcolm Ranjith was ordained by Pope Paul VI on June 29, 1975 in Rome and assumed duties on August 31, 1991 as Bishop. He functioned as Auxiliary to the Archbishop of Colombo Rt. Rev. Dr. Nicholas Marcus Fernando for five years. On January 10, 1996 he was made the Bishop of the newly created diocese of Ratnapura.
