The Japanese government has made a Rs. 34.1 million (USD 378.8 million) for the ICRC country programme for humanitarian assistance in Sri Lanka. In the past years too Japan has made an overall contribution of over Rs 136.32 million (USD 1.5 million) for the ICRC country programme. While considering ‘human security’ as one of the most important elements of its diplomatic policy Japan has pledged to continue support for the objectives of the ICRC and its humanitarian activities. The humanitarian assistance will be given to the victims of the armed conflict, mostly in the North East. The assistance will provide direct and immediate action in response to emergency situations, assistance to internally displaced civilians and resident populations whose livelihood and access to medical care have been affected.
