“Desist from power and short-term political gains” - Prof. Meyer
[October 5, 2001 - 10:20 GMT]

Professor Eric Meyer of the South Asia History and Civilisation and Director of the South Asia Department of the University of Paris urged Sri Lankan politicians to desist as far as possible from power and short term political gains and to consider as a matter of utmost urgency the necessity for fresh thinking.

Prof. Meyer was in Colombo to deliver the 42nd S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike Memorial Lecture.

He described the late Premier Bandaranaike as visionary politician who never favoured an insular conception of his country.

“He never contemplated servering its ties with the wider world, and just as his contemporary Jawaharlal Nehru, he claimed that Newly Independent Nation States should obtain an equal place in the concert of nations, rather than radically change the rule of the game,” Professor Meyer said.

He explained that the late Prime Minister’s hopes were fulfilled with Sri Lanka playing an important role in the non-aligned movement, and with many Sri Lankans fulfilling crucial functions in international organisations or distinguishing themselves outside the island in the fields of arts, literature, scientific, research and sports.
