[October 6, 2001 - 8:30 GMT]

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga reaffirmed Sri Lanka’s continued commitment to efforts to protect the environment of South Asia.

She also assured her continued support for SACEP, which was created following the Colombo Declaration to promote and support the protection, management and enhancement of the environment of South Asia.

The President’s comments were made in a message to the eighth meeting of the Governing Council of the South Asia Co-operative Environment Programme (SACEP) held recently in Colombo.

The Governing Council highlighted various administrative and programme initiatives of SACEP to be implemented in the region. The meeting was attended by International organisations such as UNEP, ESCAP, ADB, SAARC, UNDP and the United States Environment Hub for South Asia.

Meanwhile The Forest Resources Management Project and the Master Plan for the forest sector under the National Policy of Sri Lanka, which was launched at a total cost of US $ 40 million, will increase the value and sustainability of the country’s forests.

The forestry project will be implemented in seven years and the total cost of US $ 40 million will be met by a loan of US $ 27 million provided by the Asian Development Bank, US $ 10 million by the Government and US $ 3 million by the project beneficiaries.

The project includes the rehabilitation of degraded forests and action to promote protection of forests against illegal activities. It will be implemented countrywide but initially will cover 20 administrative districts.
