Today is the first death anniversary of Sri Lanka’s and the world’s first woman Prime Minister, Sirimavo Bandaranaike. Mrs. Bandaranaike achieved the rare distinction of being elected Prime Minister thrice, since she entered politics after the assassination of her husband, former Prime Minister S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike in 1960. She was 84 at the time of her death last year, while travelling back to Colombo after casting her vote at the Parliamentary Election.
