President Chandrika Kumaratunga dissolved Parliament with effect from midnight Wednesday and fixed elections for December 5. Nominations will be received between 20 and 27 October. The new parliament will sit on January 1, 2002. The move came after nine members of the ruling People’s Alliance defected to the opposition lending support to an opposition United National Party sponsored no-confidence motion which was to have been debated today. Sri Lanka’s electorate, which in the past several months has been at the receiving end of political instability, is likely to give a clear mandate for a government to implement its program without threat and uncertainty.
