Welioya diversion project to benefit 5,000 farmer families

Over 5,000 farmer families will benefit with the completion of the Welioya Diversion Project in the Moneragala District.

The project has been launched under the Community Development Programme to convert abandoned land for agricultural purposes.

The three phases of the project consist of Diversion of the body of water from Welioya, building of a canal 25km long to carry water into the unutilised areas and building a 1.2km tunnel to reach areas that cannot be reached by the canal. Sixty percent of the project is now complete.

Bambarakanda – the highest waterfall in Sri Lanka, feeds the main diversion and the canal would feed 23 reservoirs in the area. The project is expected to utilise over 3700 acres of land The project costing Rs. 640 million (USD 7.1 million) is scheduled to be completed by 2004.
