Sri Lankan expatriates in Australia paid a handsome tribute to Sri Lankan cricket coach Dav Whatmore and his wife, who were on a short visit to their hometown. The reception was organised by the Sri Lanka Cricket Foundation of Victoria and the Sri Lanka-Australia Council. The 47-year-old Sri Lankan born Australian was appointed in 1995 as the coach of Sri Lanka’s national cricket team. The team won the 1996 World cup defeating Australia. The High Commissioner for Sri Lanka in Australia, Major General Janaka Perera said that in international sporting contests, a coach, as much as the captain and players, carried the burden of a nation’s hopes and that was why Whatmore’s name was so closely associated with the achievements of Sri Lanka’s cricket team. “He is one of the best known expatriate Sri Lankans who have returned to the land of their birth to render valuable service”, the High Commissioner added.
