Two Sri Lankan girls Pumi Perera and Emiyage Goonatileke have won two prestigious prizes in the Commonwealth Essay Competition 2001. Pumi is a grade eight student of Vishaka Vidyalaya and Emiyage is a year seven student of St. Joseph’s Girls’ School, Nugegoda. Pumi submitted a 700 word-detective story, “Math Crime” under the suggested topic “Third Time He Was Not So Lucky” winning £ 100 for the third place in category C. “It was shocking but I was so happy when I was told that I had won a prize,” a delighted Pumi said. The other winner Emiyage submitted a picture brochure of 600 words on Sri Lanka, which includes 20 drawings. The brochure won for her £ 120 for the second place in Class D. “I expected something and I was right,” she said.
