[October 15, 2001 - 11:30 GMT]

Sri Lanka Ozone Summit - the 13th Meeting of Parties to the Montreal Protocol will take place at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall, Colombo from 16th to 19th October.

“This is the second largest gathering in Colombo after the Non-Aligned Movement Summit in 1976,” a spokesman for the Ministry of Forestry & Environment said.

Nearly 400 delegates from about 177 countries will gather in Colombo to strengthen the effectiveness of the Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer.

It is aimed at eliminating any remaining weaknesses in the international regime for protecting the earth’s Ozone Layer.

“Sri Lanka considers the Montreal Protocol as a landmark in the history of human civilization, because it represents a global effort to reduce the production of emissions that are harmful to the earth's ozone layer,” said President Kumaratunga in a statement issued to mark the event.

In 1987, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) adopted the Montreal Protocol to phase out chemicals that destroy stratospheric ozone, which is essential for shielding humans, plants and animals from the damaging effects of harmful ultra violet light.

At present 175 countries have become parties to this Protocol. Sri Lanka became a party by signing the protocol in 1989.
