[October 16, 2001 - 10:15 GMT]

MV Alberta of the China Shipping Corporation - one of the largest shipping lines in the world - called at the Port of Colombo Friday inaugurating a new service via Sri Lanka.

“This is a very significant event at a time where liner companies face numerous setbacks in maintaining services due to the conflicts in the Middle East,” a spokesman for the Sri Lanka Ports Authority [SLPA] said.

The new Chairman of the SLPA, Dr. Lalith Chandradasa and Captain S.L Sharma, Master of MV Alberta, exchanged plaques to mark the occasion aboard the vessel.

The vessel arrived from Port Klang, Malaysia and its next port of call is Durban, South Africa.
