[October 17, 2001 - 12:10 GMT]

The Government of Australia has committed Rs. 36,900,000 (A $ 820,000) to support Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), returnees and war-affected families in the Wanni region of northern Sri Lanka.

The main purpose of this development programme is to improve living conditions in the conflict areas.

Communities will be provided with irrigation facilities, potable water and sanitation facilities, technical support for agricultural production and improved micro-finance programmes.

The project will assist 20,000 war-affected families targeting the most vulnerable communities in the area. Special attention will be paid to low-income female-headed households.

Funds have been provided to CARE Sri Lanka to launch activities in collaboration with the Government of Sri Lanka.
