Government – LTTE agreement on Polio immunisation
[October 18, 2001 - 9:50 GMT]

The Government of Sri Lanka and the LTTE have agreed to observe October 19 and 20 as days of tranquillity for the second round of this year’s polio booster. The first round was held in September.

The two parties have come to this decision in response to a request made by UNICEF in order to make possible the immunisation campaign in war-affected areas.

Since 1995 the government, with support from UNICEF, WHO and other organisations has implemented National Immunisation Days to eradicate the dreadful childhood diseases of poliomyelitis. The country has had no case of polio reported since 1993.

Combined with this programme, the Ministry of Education has initiated an island-wide mobilisation to get every Sri Lankan child between age 5 and 14 to school on January 2, 2002, the first day of the next school year.

The programme focuses on making 2002 a year in which all children above age 5 would be attending school and fulfilling the right to education of every Sri Lankan child.
