London Buddhist Vihara celebrates 75th Anniversary
[October 18, 2001 - 11:00 GMT]

The London Buddhist Vihara, which is the oldest Theravada Buddhist Centre in the west, celebrated its 75th recently.

The occasion was celebrated with a series of activities organised in keeping with Buddhist tradition, which culminated with a public meeting and a cultural programme at the Hammersmith Town Hall in West London. The head of the London Buddhist Vihara, Most Ven. Dr. M. Vajiraganana, paid a great tribute to the Sri Lankan visionary Anagarika Dharmapala, who was the founder of the centre in London.

The London Buddhist Vihara was established on July 24 1926, after Anagarika Dharmapala was successful in buying the property at No: 86, Medley Road, in Ealing, West London.

Throughout this time the London Buddhist Vihara has rendered a service to the community irrespective of nationality or ethnic group. These include visits to the sick and needy at home or in hospital.
