“Sri Lanka is the role model for the entire region in complying with the Montreal Protocol and its goal of passing out substances that deplete the ozone layer,” said the President of MOP, Milton Catelin at a press briefing Friday. The Montreal Protocol requires its 180 signatory states to prohibit from using some 95 Ozone Depleting Substances, which cause damage to the ozone layer. Sri Lanka has been successful in meeting with the challenges responsibly and ratified all subsequent amendments to the Montreal Protocol on substances that depleted the ozone layer. The Thirteenth Meeting of Parties to the Montreal Protocol and the Colombo Summit, which was held last week, arrived at 31 new separate resolutions to strengthen the effectiveness of the Protocol. Among the key decisions made were the establishment of a working group to review the financial mechanisms to replenish the Multilateral Funds to help developing countries and the review of the ozone depleting substances covered by the Protocol to include new chemicals. Over 300 delegates from more than 100 countries attended this year’s Ozone Summit, held at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall [BMICH] in Colombo.
