Sri Lanka is among three Asian countries selected for the high-powered ten-nation Commonwealth committee to combat global terrorism. The other two Asian countries are India and Malaysia. Britain, Canada, Australia, the Bahamas, Tonga, South Africa and Tanzania are the other seven countries included in the committee. These countries were chosen to represent the 54-nation grouping of former British colonies to join hands to eradicate global terrorism, Commonwealth Secretary General, Don McKinnon said. The committee will study the latest UN resolution on terrorism, which makes it mandatory for member states to report on terrorism in their own countries within six months.
