LAUGFS Lanka Gas (Pvt) Ltd., has pledged an investment of around Rs. 1.4 billion (USD 15.3 million) in Sri Lanka within the next two years.

Gas Auto Lanka (Pvt) Ltd. Popularly known as “LAUGFS” (Lanka Autogas Fuel System) is Sri Lanka's pioneering venture for the supply of Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) as an alternative fuel for motor vehicles.

Chairman, of LAUGFS, W.K.H. Wegapitiya said that they would supply the recently introduced domestic gas at a price lower than Shell, which for several years had a monopoly on the sale of LPG.

Within the next three weeks the company plans to release 125,000 cylinders into the market offering domestic gas consumers a 12.5-kilo cylinder at only Rs. 409 (USD 4.50). “We know the true feelings of Sri Lankans,” he added.

The company has already invested Rs. 300 million (USD 3.3 million) for the first phase of operations including the LPG bottling plant, bowsers and cylinders.

The second stage would consist of building the LPG import terminal in the southern town of Galle. The terminal with a capacity of 4000 MT is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2002 at a cost of Rs. 910 million (US $ 10 million).

Meanwhile, Steven Bartholomew Corporate Communications Manager of Shell Gas Lanka Ltd. expressing his views on the challenge LAUGFS has laid before them said, “We invite competition world-wide and we will still reach out to the remotest of areas LAUGFS does not.”
