Dengue threat recurs
[October 24, 2001 -11.30 GMT]

The monsoon rains have brought with it the dengue menace for the second time this year. The mutation in the dengue mosquito strains has made it more difficult to combat, health experts have warned.

The Epidemiologists believe that as there has been a change in the virus strains, out of the four strains of viruses, two have become endemic in Sri Lanka. This disease can affect a person more than once in his lifetime and strict precautions should be taken, warned Dr T A Kulathilake, Head of the Health Ministry, Epidemiologist Unit.

With a view to eradicating this menace, the Health Ministry has introduced medicated mosquito nets. Previously, on the request made by the Health Ministry, the Cuban government provided free BTI [Bacillus thuringiensis] to fight the mosquito menace in Sri Lanka. Dr Kulathilake said this initiative was not sufficient to eradicate the menace, which has spread throughout the country and that it was taken as a supplementary measure. According to Dr Kulathilake, eradication has been difficult mainly due to the variety of breeding places of the dengue mosquitoes.
