‘Trade promotion in South Africa a Success’-EDB
[October 24, 2001 -10.15 GMT]

The Sri Lankan delegation, which visited South Africa, has successfully promoted its exports and joint venture business.

The delegation of representatives from over 26 companies visited South Africa under the patronage of the Export Market Development Program of the Commonwealth Fund for Technical Cooperation (CFTC) in response to a request made by the Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB).

“The tour was reasonably successful and we received confirmed orders worth more than USD 50,000”, said George Perera, Deputy Director of the EDB.

He added that the Sri Lankan trade team succeeded in introducing new products such as cables, handbags, stationary and handicraft to the South African market.

“The tour paved the way for the Sri Lankan delegation to meet their buyers. Country representative of the James Findlay Company met its South African buyers after 1932”, the Deputy Director said.

At present Sri Lanka is negotiating with South Africa an Avoidance of Double Taxation Agreement and is establishing a Partnership Forum for enhancing trade and investment and economic relations between the two countries.
