South Asians discuss intellectual property issues

The significance of Intellectual Property (IP) issues and the potential to provide greater support for small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) were discussed at a regional two-day meeting that concluded in Colombo Friday.

Participants from the Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand Economic Cooperation (BIMST-EC) attended the World Intellectual Property Organisation Sub-Regional Forum on cooperation in the field of Intellectual Property in these countries.

BIMST-EC was formed in 1998 to enhance the economic cooperation among the member countries.

The forum in Colombo came up with several recommendations to the respective governments of their countries to promote IP and SMEs.

Recommendations to protect the traditional knowledge, eCommerce, IP, small and medium scale enterprises (SMEs) and genetic resources are to be presented to a ministerial task force for adoption and implementation in Sri Lanka.
