‘Talking Book Library’ for visually handicapped
[October 30, 2001 -10.30 GMT]

A “Talking Book Library’ (TBL) was opened Monday in Colombo to help visually handicapped students.

The library comprises a recording studio and a Braille library. The recorded books will be available in cassette for students engaged in secondary and tertiary education as well as for adults who obtain membership in the library.

Initiated by the Federation of the Visually Handicapped, the Ceylinco Group of Companies is the main donor of the project.

“President Chandrika Kumaratunga donated a sum of Rs. one million from the President’s Fund towards the project,” said R. A. Sirisena, General Manager of the Federation of Visually Handicapped.

“This library would be of immense value for both the young and adults as well, especially to those who become blind later in their life as it has been experienced that these individuals find it difficult to adjust their senses to read Braille”, he added.

The Federation is seeking ways and means of donating cassettes to schools for the visually handicapped.
