[November 2, 2001 -5.30 GMT]

“The Government is ready to provide permanent shelter to 66,000 shanty dwellers in Colombo by year 2005,” said the Minister of Urban Development, Public Utilities, Housing and Sports and Deputy Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera Wednesday.

The Sahasapura Housing Scheme, will be vested in the public on November 25. The Sahasapura Housing Scheme comprises 676 apartments and the beneficiaries are selected from 15 slums and shanty settlements in Colombo, and ultimately this housing scheme will benefit the housing needs of 687 families. With this housing scheme, the government had been able to realise the housing needs of 66,000 people in Colombo, he added.

The Urban Development Authority (UDA) initiated another Housing programme named Thirasara Purawara in 1998, to overcome the shelter problem in Colombo.
