A National Cleaner Production Centre (NCPC) is to be set up soon in Sri Lanka with assistance from the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The main goal of this Centre will be to create awareness by taking the message of cleaner production to as many industries as possible to promote cleaner production concepts in Sri Lanka. The Centre is expected to provide professional consultancy and advisory services to industries and train industrial personnel in launching and CP assessments in industries. This project has received Rs. 15 million (USD 165,000) in Norwegian assistance, and is scheduled to commence operations by the beginning of next year. This Centre will be established at the Small and Medium Enterprise Developers [SMED], which is the support consultancy arm of the Federation of Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Sri Lanka [FCCISL]. “The Centre will have a Steering Committee comprising the private and public sectors and maybe even non governmental organisations,” said Mr. V. R. Sena Peiris, Consultant – Environment and Industrial Division Project SMED.
