A galaxy of astronauts, actors and other celebrities will honour eminent science fiction writer and scientist Sir Arthur C. Clarke at a gala in Los Angeles on November 15. The event will also announce a series of annual Arthur C. Clarke awards for Film and Television excellence. Hosted by the Space Frontier Foundation, talk show host Larry King will be the master of ceremonies. It will be co-chaired by notables from the arts and sciences, including actors Tom Hanks and Morgan Freeman, Titanic producer James Cameron, Playboy founder Hugh Hefner, futurist Alvin Toffler, and astronauts Jim Lovell, Buzz Aldrin and Dennis Tito. Apollo II astronaut Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon, has collaborated with Clarke before. Clarke wrote an epilogue for Aldrin’s “First on the Moon” in 1969, and a foreword for “Encounter with Tibet” in 1996. Sir Clarke will participate in this event via a pre-recorded video message. He will use the latest three-dimensional video projection technology to send his greetings. A live satellite link may also be used to interact with the participants from Sri Lanka, where he lives. “I feel delighted and honoured by this event, and am only sorry that I cannot be at the gala in person,” Sir. Clarke said. “I am now completely wheel chaired owing to Post Polio, and am very limited in time and energy. I cannot engage in overseas travel, and in fact, have no plans to leave Sri Lanka again.” Sir Arthur C. Clarke is one of the most celebrated science fiction writers of all time with over 80 books to his credit and 50 million copies in print. His numerous best-sellers include Childhood’s End, Rendezvous with Rama, 2001: A Space Odyssey, 2010: Odyssey Two and most recently 3001: The Final Odyssey. The other organisations co-sponsoring the gala event are the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation, SETI’s Haughton Mars Project, the Arthur C. Clarke Institute for Modern Technologies in Sri Lanka and the Permission to Dream Project, an international initiative using space to inspire and motivate underprivileged children. Ten per cent of the proceeds from this event will be donated to “Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund”, which supports those affected by the September 11 attack on the United States.
