The Department of Wildlife Conservation in collaboration with the Asian Development Bank is to set up a special development and management plan for seven protected areas in the country. The USD 34 million plan, aims at managing Sri Lanka’s five National Parks and two protected sites under a comprehensive management system. “The five National Parks coming under the project include Bundala, Udawalawa, Wasgomuwa, Minneriya and Horton Plains while Peak Wilderness Sanctuary and Ritigala are covered under the special protected sites”, said Jayantha Jayawardena, Project Director, Department of Wildlife Conservation. The Project Director said that the project became effective from September 17. The plans will comprise all aspects of park management including infrastructure development, habitat enrichment, and invasive flora and fauna control, strategies as well as visitor impact and monitoring.
