Power generation up by 110 megawatts
[November 15, 2001 - 11.20 GMT]

The commissioning on Wednesday of the first phase of the Combined Cycle Gas-Steam Power Plant at the Kelanitissa Thermal Power Station in Colombo, will add another 110 mega watts to the National Grid.

On completion of the entire Combined Cycle Power Plant project next year, the country’s power generation will increase by at least 10 percent adding 55 megawatts more to the national grid. The project is funded by the Japanese Bank for International Corporation [JABIC].

Sri Lanka recently experienced the harsh results of being totally dependent on hydro electricity with the non-arrival of monsoon rains for over twenty-two months. The country’s economy was badly affected when the Ceylon Electricity Board [CEB], the state body responsible for power generation, had to resort to long power cuts to conserve water in the reservoirs feeding the hydro-power stations.

“The focus of the CEB is to bring a 50/50 ratio between hydro and thermal power generation which is now at sixty-forty,” a spokesman for the CEB said.

The thermal power generation has been increased from 250 MW to 670MW since 1994.

Five new power generation projects, which will provide electricity to 80 percent of the population, are now in the early stages of implementation.
