The European Union Election Observation Mission appealed to the leaders of all political parties to agree on a code of conduct. “The code of conduct should not only give a commitment to non-violence but would also state that their respective parties would take disciplinary action against any of their candidates or activists who engage in unacceptable and undemocratic behavior,” the Mission’s Chief Observer John Cushnahan said. He urged all the government and the security forces to cooperate fully with the Elections Commissioner to ensure that the 17th Amendment was implemented both in the spirit and letter of the law. “Nothing undermines the democratic process more than parties themselves either resorting to violence, condoning it or being ambivalent about its use”, he said. Sri Lanka will go to the polls on December 5 to elect 225 representatives to the twelfth Parliament of Sri Lanka.
