Ferry service between Sri Lanka and India to resume
[November 21, 2001 - 10.30 GMT]

The Ceylon Shipping Corporation (CSC) will begin a passenger ferry service to India in partnership with its counterpart, Shipping Corporation of India (SCI).

Studies have shown that there is vast scope for a passenger service between Colombo and Tuticorin and that is a viable proposition provided governmental approvals from both sides could be expedited.

“India’s national carrier SCI had expressed interest to start a ferry service to Colombo and the proposal could be an ideal opportunity to embark on a joint service between the two national carriers,” Indian High Commission’s Counsellor V. Ashok said.

A ferry service, which operated between Rameshwaran in India and Talaimannar in North-Western Sri Lanka, was suspended in 1985 due to the escalation of the war.
