The Government of Japan has provided agricultural equipment to the value of Rs. 450 million (USD 4.9 million) to Sri Lanka under its Food Production Grant programme. The grant was made on November 21. The total delivery included 20,000 metric tons of fertilizer, 105 units of two-wheel tractors, 22 units of four-wheel tractors, tillage equipment and 6 units of combine harvesters. The Ambassador for Japan in Sri Lanka Seichiro Otsuku handed over the goods to Agriculture, Forestry, Food and Cooperative Development Minister D.M. Jayaratne, Wednesday. The equipment will be given to the farmers through the Agrarian Development Centres and farmer organisations. The Minster said that the Government also planned to obtain micro irrigation equipment under the Grant to improve productivity at the small farmer level.
