The Norwegian government has offered Rs. 800 million (USD 8.5 million) for a rural integrated development programme in Sri Lanka. The programme expects to provide cold storage facilities and buying centres to assist fishermen in Hambantota, Moneragala and Chilaw. Additionally, fishing equipment will be provided to upgrade and increase production for the export of seafood to foreign countries. This rural integrated development programme, which is conducted by the Ministry of Plan Implementation, expects to provide similar facilities to vegetable and fruit growers as well, in these districts. Two main sales outlets will be set up in Colombo to market these products at low prices. This will ultimately benefit more than 2,000 families who will be able to export surplus harvest to European countries with the assistance of the Norwegian government.
