Social Security benefits for over nine million government employees
[November 23, 2001 - 11.25 GMT]

Sri Lanka’s premier social security programme for employees, the Employees Provident Fund (EPF), has swelled to a healthy Rs. 222.9 billion to the credit of members at the end of year 2000.

This is a near three-fold increase from the Rs. 85.3 million which stood to the credit of members in 1994.

The number of members of the Fund has increased from 6 million in 1994 to over nine million by end 2000.

From its inception in 1958, the policy of the government has been to invest EPF funds mainly in Government securities in order to guarantee the repayment of benefits to the workers.

The EPF has invested 98 percent of its funds in government securities while the balance 2 percent has been invested in other private securities and quoted company shares.
