The Government is planning to set up four new fisheries harbours in Hambantota, Kalametiya, Ambalangoda and Chilaw. The estimated cost is around 14.4 Billion USD and the Asian Development Bank is funding the project. Construction is already underway says the Fisheries Ministry. Infrastructure facilities already implemented have given a major boost to the fisheries sector, such as increased incomes and improved quality of life for the fisher families in the region. “We earmarked 3 years for this massive project and loan agreements have been already signed with the Asian Development Bank”, Nishshanka Wijeratne, Chairman, the Ceylon Fisheries Harbour Corporation said. The project designers Halcrow Maritime of the UK have already begun work. Fish production in the country had increased considerably last year compared to the corresponding figure the previous year. The Central Bank, statistics indicate an increase of 4.9 percent.
