[November 28, 2001 - 6.30 GMT]

The President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga sent a congratulatory message to the Prime Minister of Australia John Howard, MP on the occasion of his re-election.

The full text of the message is as follows;

November 20, 2001

His Excellency Mr. John Howard, MP
Prime Minister of Australia

Your Excellency,

On behalf of the Government and people of Sri Lanka and on my own behalf I extend to you my warmest congratulations and sincere good wishes on your re-election as Prime Minister of Australia after a convincing victory at the recently held Elections.

Your re-election for a third consecutive term is indeed a reflection of the confidence the people of Australia have placed in your wise leadership at a time of stress and uncertainty in the global scene.

I very much look forward to meeting you at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Coolum in March next year.  It is my fervent wish to co-operate closely with you to ensure the success of CHOGM, as well as to address our minds on urgent measures to combat terrorism in all its ugly forms and manifestations.

I also take this opportunity to send you my best wishes, for your good health, personal well-being and for the prosperity of the people of Australia.

Please accept, Excellency, the assurances of my highest consideration.

Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga
President of Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka
