Sahasapura is the largest residential complex built thus far in Sri Lanka with five wings, 14 storeys, 671 housing units and over 50 commercial units. The residents from fifteen under served settlements in the Colombo city will benefit from the modern conveniences in this complex. They will receive full ownership of these condominiums through a novel method of exchanging a house built at a cost of nearly one million rupees, for their dwelling in an underserved settlement. The first re-settlement at the Sahasa building complex marked the beginning of a long-term plan to change Colombo’s environment through the Thirasara Purawara Programme. The Programme will be extended in phases to benefit 66,000 low income earners in the Colombo and Greater Colombo areas. In the Colombo area alone 150,000 families live in shanties and temporary structures. These settlements occupy half the city. In order to adequately address the housing shortage in the country, 73,000 houses would have to be constructed every year for the next five years.
