Sri Lanka outplay Windies in test series
[December 4, 2001 - 9.30 GMT]

Sri Lanka wrote a new chapter in their Test cricket history when they cleaned up the West Indies in brilliant style with a spectacular ten-wicket victory in the third and final Test match at SSC Grounds yesterday.

With this resounding victory the Sri Lankans recorded their first ever 3-0 series win in their 19-year Test history.

Sri Lanka won the first Test in Galle by ten wickets and the second in Kandy by 131 runs.

“We have never had a series where the batsmen and bowlers performed so consistently. That was the key factor in our series victory,” said the jubilant skipper Sanath Jayasuriya after the match.

Chaminda Vass, who turned in his best ever test performance, a match-bag of 14 for 191 runs was the yesterday’s match winner.

Vass’ feat now stands second only to Muttaiah Muralitharan’s astonishing 14-wicket haul for 222 against England in 1998.

President Chandrika Kumaratunga warmly congratulated the Sri Lanka cricket captain Sanath Jayasuriya and his team mates on their scintillating victory.

Sri Lanka have now climbed to the joint third position with 16 points in the official ICC Test championship table following their third victory over the touring West Indies.
