Colombo - first Asian city in Asia Urbs Programme
[December 13, 2001 - 12.15 GMT]

Colombo became the first Asian city to be involved in the development project under the Asia Urbs programme co-financed by the European Commission. It was launched in Colombo on Tuesday.

“The project would use Geographical Information Systems (GIS) - an Aerial System - to graphically introduce the city onto the computer. It would help include the city’s water lines and cable lines. It would also help us in locating an area quicker and to find the shortest path to reach it in emergency,” Mayor of Colombo Omar Kamil said.

A project team includes at least two local governments in the European Union and one in Asia. The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) has teamed-up with Paris and Madrid.

"Paris and Madrid are two main cities in the world using GIS and they are willing to help us with both their knowledge and technology,” The Mayor added. The process would take two years to complete.
