PM calls for new political culture devoid of violence
[December 14, 2001 - 4.00 GMT]

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe has appealed to all citizens to desist from violence and urged the police to take legal action against perpetrators, irrespective of their political bias.

“Police must take action against those responsible for violence regardless of their political affiliations,” the Prime Minister said in a brief meeting at Nalandaramaya, Nugegoda after attending a religious ceremony Wednesday, to bless him and the new Cabinet.

Mr. Wickremasinghe said that steps have been taken to create a new political culture devoid of violence. “Let’s forget the past and unite to create a new era sans confrontational politics,” the new Prime Minister said.

He emphasized that a new political culture based on equality and non-violence should be built. “Today our society and politics have distanced themselves from these two integral factors and we should strive to achieve these goals again,” he added.
