Private sector welcomes ceasefire
December 27, 2001 - 10.00 GMT]

The private sector backed apolitical peace initiative ‘Sri Lanka First’ gladly welcomes the month-long ceasefire between the Government troops and the LTTE.

“This decision (by the Government in response to a unilateral ceasefire move by the LTTE) will go a long way in creating an atmosphere conductive to the peace process. It is an extremely significant step in starting the rebuilding and rehabilitation process,” Sri Lanka First President Jagath Fernando said.

“It is our sincere appeal to all concerned to support the government at this time of need, and work together in building a brighter, stronger future for our children and our country,” he added.

Sri Lanka First was launched in September 2001 with the central message - “The cost of no peace is higher than the cost of war”. Its sole purpose is to mobilise mass support to re-establish peace in Sri Lanka.
